Natural materials are variable in colour, shape and size. Working with these variations to find the natural rhythm of the material is the stone masons skill. Each piece is chosen, shaped and sized to balance the best use of material with the best fit. Hammer forming edges by hand gives a straight but imperfect finish.

Regular sawn stone tile units of any size need a different approach. Any number of formal bonds or patterns can be set up to introduce rhythm to the arrangement. A border can be established, and a half, quarter or resized unit can be woven repeatedly into the pattern as an offset. It does involve more cutting, but it allows the set size of the unit to enhance the rhythm rather than defeat it. Patterns of any complexity or scale can be followed or designed using contrasting materials for special effect, from mosaic to massive.
