Haddington House now serves as the offices for the all the coucillors of East Lothian Council. It is a very fine example of early seventeenth century scots architecture. Between the house and St. Marys church is Lady Kittys' Garden which is open to the public. It has a herbal knot garden, laburnam bower and apple house, and is open through to the path at the side of the river Tyne and the kirkyard. It is well worth a visit.

Although it faces the street this is actually the back door of the house. The doorway was created, and the portico added to the building in 1680.
The street end was in very poor condition, and had begun to deteriorate rapidly. It was carefully surveyed then dismantled.
New stones were hand cut to replace missing parts. As much as possible of the original stones were kept and repaired. Then the whole thing was carefully put back together. |
