the playfair project, national galleries of scotland, edinburgh

These enormous letters took me seven weeks of hard work. The stone is clasach, which is very hard but takes a really sharp edge. The tool marks were left as a finish, which means the work had to be very neat and the chisels kept sharp. I wore out 14 tungsten tipped chisels cutting this.

The full size layout and design of these magnificent, 'Egyptian' style letters was set out by Michael Harvey from Devon. He provided excellent working drawings and templets. I learned a lot from working with them.

I was proud to have my sample letter approved by the architects and to be chosen to cut them. It was the neatly chiselled finish that I leave on my work that impressed them.

The reason this page took a moment longer to download than the others are these wonderfull QTVR images of the Weston Link and Princes' Streeet gardens. Take a hold of the pictures with your mouse and scroll round and up & down for an Edinburgh panorama. Thanks to Jed Gordon for photographic wizardry.
