The Scottish county of East Lothian, where I live and do most of my work, has some of the finest eighteenth century carved headstones in the world. they provide a record of past lives, and a real living link to the way people thought and saw the world.
They provide me with great pleasure, and endless inspiration.
The scripts with which the letters are cut informs my lettercutting, and can be seen changing and developing through time.
Much of the symbolism carved onto and around the older stones tells its own stories to a people who would not have been able to read, but who nonetheless had a rich oral vocabulary of literature, the scriptures, legend and folklore.
A trade symbol is often shown, like this one here from Pencaitland, a tailor.
