When fireplaces have been walled up, the bit of the jamb stones at either side that used to project into the room will have been battered off. Once you remove half a tonne of filthy debris and tidy up a bit, the original builders opening will look a bit like this.

I have re~surfaced the hearth stone and picked out and repointed the back panel. A new lintol and new faces to plant onto the damaged jambs were cut from a pair of jamb stones from another fireplace to get an exact match for the stone. |

The black cheeks of the old jambs were cleaned up by droving neat, regular, parallel chisel cuts.
