3 Harbours Arts Festival

Saint Columba

Home

In 2006 my wife persuaded me to open my workshop to the public for the first ever Three Harbours Arts Festival. I used the time to do a large carving I had been wanting to do for some time.

It is of two fishermen in a boat, hauling in a net with fish in it. The carving is scaled up from an exquisite small carving in oak I noticed in Chalmers Church here in Port Seton. Carved onto the top of the newel post of the stair up to the pulpit, it is not even visible to the congregation. It is charmingly portrayed, and will work well as a large scale stone piece.

Please feel free to visit the workshop, virtually on the web, where I will post progress updates. Or even better if you can, stop by and watch it happening live, complete with dust.

I did not manage to finish the carving in the week of the festival, but I got all of the elements in place and some of them nearly finshed. This is how it looked on Saturday morning. We must have had nearly 300 people round over the week to see what I was up to, so its amazing that I even got that done.

The community council here in Cockenzie and Port Seton wanted the fishermen as a feature for the entrance to the village. They applied to East Lothian Council and secured funding to buy the carving. It was put into place in December 2006.

Completed and in place at the eastern end of Port Seton/Cockenzie
