columban monk

I was offered  a huge stone window cill, removed from an old Edinburgh building during alterations. It is really fine grained sanstone and a lovely brown colour. As soon as i saw the block of stone it suggested a compact human figure.

The figure is of a monk in habit, his hood up, head hung. He carries a scroll he has written, marking the death of Columba. The 1510 th anniversary of his death will be on Saturday June 9th, as I am bringing this carving towards resolution.
